Quote checker: is your quote in the normal range?

Use this quote checker to see where a price from a South London builder, electrician, plasterer, plumber, roofer, tiler or tree surgeon sits against the typical range for that job. Every range comes from one of our hiring guides, which name their sources, and every result links to the guide it came from.

Does the quote include VAT?

When you check a quote we keep the trade, job, area, price, VAT answer and result, with nothing that identifies you, to build a picture of what South London trades charge.

What the quote checker compares against

The checker holds 41 prices across 7 trades, and each one is stated in one of our hiring guides. Most come from a named cost guide: MyJobQuote, Checkatrade, Housekeep or the Which? Trusted Traders survey. The rest are our own London figures built from published cost guides, and the guide says which. The checker and the guides use the same figures, so a result never contradicts the answer it links to.

Some ranges are London figures. Others are UK-wide, where no source publishes a London one, and those say “UK” in the job name. The hourly and day rates for builders, electricians, plumbers and roofers are our London estimates, based on national figures, because no authoritative source measures a London rate for those trades.

A job only appears here if a guide gives a sourced price for it. The other trades we list, such as decorators, carpenters and landscapers, show typical costs on their own pages but are not in the checker.

What your result means

Below the range. Your price is lower than the published figures for the job. That can be a good deal. It can also mean the quote leaves something out, so check what it covers before you compare totals.

In the range. Your price is inside the typical range for the job. The result shows whether it is at the lower end, the middle or the upper end.

Above the range. Your price is higher than the published figures. Awkward access, a higher specification and urgent work all push a price up, so ask what is driving it and get a second quote on the same scope.

A result compares your quote with published figures. It is not a valuation of your job, and it is not a judgement on the tradesperson who quoted.

Five things to check in any quote

  1. It is written and itemised, so labour, materials and extras show separately.
  2. It says whether VAT is included.
  3. It says what is not included: waste removal, scaffolding or other access, and making good afterwards are the usual gaps.
  4. The payment terms are clear, with no large payment asked for before work starts.
  5. Gas work is done by someone on the Gas Safe Register. Notifiable electrical work, such as a new circuit or a replacement consumer unit, is done by an electrician registered with a Part P competent person scheme, or notified to Building Control before work starts.
