The 1930s semis that dominate Bromley came with generous plots, and the trees planted then are now mature. That produces steady demand for crown reduction, deadwood removal and storm damage work, alongside straightforward felling where a tree has outgrown its position or is undermining a boundary.

Protection is the first question. Bromley Council holds the Tree Preservation Order register and the borough contains numerous conservation areas. Work on a protected tree without consent is an offence under section 210 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, with government guidance putting the penalty at up to £20,000 in the magistrates' court and an unlimited fine at Crown Court in serious cases. In a conservation area, section 211 requires six weeks' written notice instead.

Boundary trees cause more disputes here than anywhere else in the borough's tree work. You may prune branches overhanging your property back to the boundary line, but the branches and any fruit remain the neighbour's property, and you cannot enter their land without permission. If the tree is protected, the right to prune back does not override the need for consent.

Checkatrade's 2026 figures put felling at £344 to £727, crown reduction at £272 to £553 and stump grinding at £163 to £320, with full removal spanning £300 to £3,000. On large Bromley plots, access is often better than in inner London, which can keep costs towards the middle of those ranges rather than the top.

Ask about public liability cover and Arboricultural Association membership before booking. Also ask what happens to the arisings, since chipping and removal are sometimes priced separately from the felling itself.
